Our History & Past Masters
An invitation was accepted by the Lodge to attend the laying of the cornerstone for Chicago’s new post office in June of 1874. Invitations to the event were also extended to lodges in the surrounding area; Chestnut, Latham,Warrensburg, Illiopolis and Elkhart.
The hall that the Lodge had owned was sold in 1876 for $600.00. It was then decided that the Lodge should rent rooms above the William and C.E. Schafer store for $75.00 each six months. In 1882, the Lodge purchased a building and lot from William A. Schafer for the amount of $3,800.00 of which the Blue Lodge paid one third.
Around this time dues were $2.00 a year. An organ was purchased for $75.00 and the first electric lights amounted to a bill of $8.00; costing 25 cents per light per month. Although the use of tobacco was prohibited in the lodge room, the minutes show that the lodge had occasionally spent $1.00 on cigars and had at one point purchased spittoons. The first time that a phone bill had been paid was recorded in May 1902 for the amount of $4.00.
The Lodge acquired some properties from 1909 -1919. These consisted of one third of a bank building located on the east side of the Mt. Pulaski square (where it currently resides), one third of the Vonderlieth Building, and the Jenner Hotel, which was located south of the square behind the National Bank. It was also during this period that the Lodge sold it's interest in the Masonic building to C.F. Schafer for $4,000.00.
The Lodge considered selling the Jenner Hotel for no less than $6,000.00 in May of 1924; however, in December of 1935, the minutes tell that it was still property of the Lodge.
The Tyler’s duties increased in 1936, as well as his pay, as he was expected to build fires, keep the rooms clean and to drain the water pipes in the winter for the payment of $10.00 a month. The three marble slabs now found on the Worshipful Masters, Senior Warden and Junior Wardens pedestals were donated in September 5, 1940, by Brother Ed Goddard. The Brothers of the Lodge voted in February of 1944 to dedicate a plaque to those members that had served or were still serving in World War II.
As the men returned to Mt. Pulaski from their duties in World War II, the Lodge saw a sharp increase in petitions. From 1945-1946, twenty-one men petitioned the Lodge. Two years later the Lodge continued to see an influx of candidates as an additional twelve petitioned in 1948.
The Cornland Lodge became affiliated with the Mt. Pulaski Lodge No. 87 inFebruary of 1982.
